Church Courtyard

Peace Dale Congregational Church, a beautiful historic stone structure completed in 1872, added an annex in 2007.  We designed and built this courtyard to tie the old and new together and welcome visitors to both the church and annex.  A space for quiet contemplation as well as a gathering place for outdoor services, the design was inspired by cloister gardens found in many old churches and monasteries.

Spring.  ‘Winter King’ hawthornes in bloom.  Low boxwood hedges define interior garden spaces and reinforce seating wall layout.

Courtyard in winter.  The hawthorne berries persist through most of the winter to add seasonal color.

Seating wall detail.  The wallstone and granite capstones were selected to compliment the stone facade of the church and the granite sills at the annex.

Fall Garden.  Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ carries color through the end of September
